October is SIDS Awareness Month.
A national voice for child safety is Alison Rhodes, also known as The Safety Mom. When we interviewed her a while ago on ‘Child Safety 101,’she offered some important SIDS risk-reducing tips for new parents.
Things to keep in mind include:
- Place baby on his or her back to sleep.
- Do not overheat the room.
- Keep the crib free of any items including blankets and stuffed animals.
- Avoid over-bundling the baby.
- Never smoke around the baby.
To read more about child safety and ways to create the safest environment for your baby, see:
{Child Safety 101} and {Nursery Safety}
And although we don’t advocate comforters or extra blankets in your baby’s crib, swaddling blankets do offer a safe way of keeping your newborn cozy and secure for the first months of his or her life.
For swaddling tips, see:
{How to Swaddle Your Newborn}
And for a round-up on some of the most popular swaddling blankets, see:
{Swaddle Blankets: A Comparison}
Also, did you know that white noise helps reduce the risk of SIDS, too? Read more…

Here’s to years and years of safe & sweet slumbers for your little one(s)!
